Abbreviations & Terms

UMEME: Uganda’s main electricity distribution company responsible for the supply of electricity.
UEDCL: Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited, A state-owned company responsible for operating, maintaining, and expanding the power distribution network in Uganda.
ERA: Electricity Regulatory Authority, responsible for regulating the generation, transmission, distribution, sale, export, and import of electricity in Uganda.
NWSC: National Water and Sewerage Corporation, A government-owned organization responsible for providing water and sewerage services in urban areas across Uganda.
Mechanical Engineering:
Engineering discipline involving the design and maintenance of mechanical systems, such as water pipes.
KVA: Kilovolt-Ampere, a unit of apparent power in an electrical circuit, indicating the capacity of transformers or generators.
LV: Low Voltage, Electrical systems that operate at voltages below 1kV, typically used in residential or commercial installations.
HV: High Voltage, Electrical systems or powerlines operating at voltages
above 69kV, typically used for long-distance transmission of electricity.
CCTV: Closed-Circuit Television, a surveillance system used for security purposes.
ABS: Air Break Switch, a switch that uses air as the insulating medium to open or close an electrical circuit, often used in high-voltage lines.
Plinths: Concrete or stone platforms on which electrical transformers or other machinery are mounted.
Low Voltage Powerline Construction:
Powerlines that carry voltages below 1kV, generally used for residential or commercial electrical supply.
Medium Voltage Powerline Construction:
Construction of powerlines that carry voltages between 1kV and 69kV, typically used for regional distribution.
Industrial Electrical Installations: Complex electrical systems used in factories, manufacturing plants, and other industrial environments for powering heavy machinery and equipment.
Domestic Electrical Installations: Electrical systems installed in residential buildings for lighting, heating, appliances, etc.
